What is the American Board of Endodontics?
Founded in 1956, the American Board of Endodontics is the only certifying board in the dental specialty of endodontics recognized by the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists. The purpose of the ABE is to assure the public that the endodontists it certifies have demonstrated exceptional knowledge, skill and expertise in the specialty of endodontics and to progressively raise the quality of patient care.
How did Dr. Medema become Board Certified?
To become Board Certified, Dr. Medema completed three examinations and met the requirements listed below:
Education: Graduated from an accredited ADA approved postdoctoral program. Dr. Medema completed this at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)
Written Examination: Dr. Medema passed a one day written exam that tested a broad range of fields including anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, radiology, statistics, clinical endodontics and related disciplines.
Case History Examination: Dr. Medema passed a portfolio based exam where a variety of cases were submitted to demenstrate exceptional knowledge, skills and expertise in the full scope of the field of endodontics.
Oral Examination: Dr. Medema passed an oral exam where a team of experts questioned him about a variety of diagnosis and treatment situations. Throughout the extensive interview, he was required to demonstrate a high level of skill in problem solving, decision making, analysis, creativity and evaluation. He was also required to quote literature to support his answers.
